From Seed to Root: The Dark Work, Pt. 1
I. It All Begins with the Seed
A Seed Is an Encoded Identity.
Genesis 1:11 – Then God said, “Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb that yields seed, and the fruit tree that yields fruit according to its kind, whose seed is in itself, on the earth”; and it was so.
A Seed Is Potential Hidden in Disguise.
Matthew 13:31-32 – Another parable He put forth to them, saying: “The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and sowed in his field, which indeed is the least of all the seeds; but when it is grown it is greater than the herbs and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and nest in its branches.”
A Seed's Potential Is Released through Death.
John 12:24 – “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it produces much grain.”
Matthew 16:25 – “For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it.”
II. The Soil Is the Dark Place of Transformation
The Soil Is Where the Seed Becomes the Root.
Mark 4:3-8 – “Listen! Behold, a sower went out to sow. And it happened, as he sowed, that some seed fell by the wayside; and the birds of the air came and devoured it. Some fell on stony ground, where it did not have much earth; and immediately it sprang up because it had no depth of earth. But when the sun was up it was scorched, and because it had no root it withered away. And some seed fell among thorns; and the thorns grew up and choked it, and it yielded no crop. But other seed fell on good ground and yielded a crop that sprang up, increased and produced: some thirtyfold, some sixty, and some a hundred.”
The Soil Is the Place of God’s Hidden Work.
Mark 4:26-27 – And He said, “The kingdom of God is as if a man should scatter seed on the ground, and should sleep by night and rise by day, and the seed should sprout and grow, he himself does not know how.”
ACTION STEPS:
Identify Your Seed – What has God placed in you that carries His identity and potential? Name it. Write it down.
Assess Your Soil – Is your current environment helping that seed grow or choking it? What needs to change?
Submit to the Dark Work – Stop fighting to get out of the soil too soon. Pray daily: “Lord, do Your work in me—break what needs breaking, and grow what needs growing.”
Protect the Process – Guard against “thorns” (distractions), “hard ground” (offense or bitterness), and “shallow roots” (lack of depth in God’s Word).
Stay Expectant – Keep your eyes on the harvest, even when all you can see is dirt.
