Live Free, Die Empty: Reset to Zero, or Reseed For Tomorrow?
Ecclesiastes 3:11 – He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also, He has put eternity in their hearts, except that no one can find out the work that God does from beginning to end.
Psalm 90:10, 12 – 10The days of our lives are seventy years; and if by reason of strength they are eighty years, yet their boast is only labor and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away. 12So teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.
I. The Sobering Reality — Life Continues Without You
Genesis 8:21-22 – 21And the LORD smelled a soothing aroma. Then the LORD said in His heart, “I will never again curse the ground for man’s sake, although the imagination of man’s heart is evil from his youth; nor will I again destroy every living thing as I have done. 22WHILE THE EARTH REMAINS, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, winter and summer, and day and night shall not cease.”
Ecclesiastes 1:4 – One generation passes away, and another generation comes; But the earth abides forever.
II. The Seed Principle — What Survives You Must Leave You
John 12:23-25 – 23But Jesus answered them, saying, “The hour has come that the Sonof Man should be glorified. 24Most assuredly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it produces much grain. 25He who loves his life will lose it, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life.
• The Cost of Preservation: A seed kept safe stays alone forever. It multiplies by dying, not by hiding.
• Two Different Questions: Self-preservation asks what you can keep. Eternal thinking asks what will still be producing after you're gone.
Galatians 6:9 – And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart.
III.The Essential Sacrifice — Stop Saving Yourself For Later
Romans 12:1 – I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service.
• What It Means: RETIREMENT can end your EMPLOYMENT. It should not end your USEFULNESS or your INFLUENCE.
• The Math: More wisdom. More scars. More to give. And we retire the exact moment we have the most to offer.
• We've made peace with ending at ZERO: We planned for it. We budgeted for it. We called it retirement and threw a party on the way out.
Psalm 92:12-14 – 12The righteous shall flourish like a palm tree, He shall grow like a cedar in Lebanon. 13Those who are planted in the house of the LORD Shall flourish in the courts of our God. 14They shall still bear fruit in old age; They shall be fresh and flourishing.
IV. The Value Transfer — Get It Out of Your Hands
Psalm 71:18 – Now also when I am old and gray-headed, O God, do not forsake me, Until I declare Your strength to this generation, Your power to everyone who is to come.
• Your Mistakes: Somebody shouldn't have to pay full price for a lesson you've already purchased.
• Your Wisdom: Knowledge that dies in your head serves only one lifetime.
• Your Skills: Thirty years to master. Ten years to transfer — if you actually do it.
• Your Scars: Survived pain becomes somebody else's roadmap.
• Your Resources: Don't consume the whole harvest. Some of it was always meant to go back into seed.
• Your Faith: What God proved to you should become evidence for somebody standing behind you, still deciding whether any of this is real.
• Consumers Ask: “What did I get? Did I like it? Did it meet my needs?”
• Contributors Ask: “Who can I strengthen? What can I leave here that keeps producing after I'm gone?”
Acts 20:35 – I have shown you in every way, by laboring like this, that you must support the weak. And remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that He said, “It is more blessed to give than to receive.”
IF YOUR LIFETIME ENDED TODAY, HOW MUCH OF YOUR LIFE WOULD END WITH IT?
