Live Free, Die Empty: The Refinement Process

Mark 4:29 – “But when the grain ripens, immediately he puts in the sickle, BECAUSE THE HARVEST HAS COME.”

Leviticus 19:9-10 – 9“When you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not wholly reap the corners of your field, nor shall you gather the gleanings of your harvest. 10And you shall not glean your vineyard, nor shall you gather every grape of your vineyard; you shall leave them for the poor and the stranger: I am the LORD your God.”

I. The WINNOWING Process

Your First Instinct Says, “KEEP IT”; But God Says, “LET IT GO”.

Matthew 3:12 – “His winnowing fan is in His hand, and He will thoroughly clean out His threshing floor, and gather His wheat into the barn; but He will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.”

• Stop calling loss what God calls chaff.

What are you calling loss right now that God has already labeled chaff?

• Don't blame the wind when it’s God holding the fan.

Matthew 3:12a – His winnowing fan is in His hand, and He will thoroughly clean out His threshing floor

Are you angry or struggling with the circumstances that God personally authorized?

• Stop exhausting yourself fighting for chaff.

What are you still fighting for that God has already let go of?

II. The SIFTING Process

Amos 9:9 – “For surely I will command, and will sift the house of Israel among all nations, as grain is sifted in a sieve; yet not the smallest grain shall fall to the ground.”

• The wind catches the obvious — the sieve catches the counterfeit.

What small thing are you defending right now that the big tests never exposed?

• The enemy holds the sieve, but Jesus bolsters our faith.

Luke 22:31-32 – 31And the Lord said, “Simon, Simon! Indeed, Satan has asked for you, that he may sift you as wheat. 32But I have prayed for you, that your faith should not fail; and when you have returned to Me, strengthen your brethren.”

In your present circumstance, are you confusing the hand holding the sieve, with the One who determines what survives it?

• You Can Survive the Wind and Still Need the Sieve

— THE SIEVE: The People who actually KNOW YOU.

Proverbs 27:5-6 – 5Open rebuke is better than love carefully concealed. 6Faithful are the wounds of a friend, But the kisses of an enemy are deceitful.

Proverbs 27:17 – As iron sharpens iron, so a man sharpens the countenance of his friend.

Psalm 141:5 – Let the righteous strike me; It shall be a kindness. And let him rebuke me; It shall be as excellent oil; Let my head not refuse it. For still my prayer is against the deeds of the wicked.

What small compromise have you been defending instead of letting the sieve expose it for what it is?

III. The STORING Process

Your third instinct says, “hoard it”; God says, “steward it”.

Luke 12:16-21 – 16Then He spoke a parable to them, saying: “The ground of a certain rich man yielded plentifully. 17And he thought within himself, saying, ‘What shall I do, since I have no room to store my crops?’ 18So he said, ‘I will do this: I will pull down my barns and build greater, and there I will store all my crops and my goods. 19And I will say to my soul, “Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years; take your ease; eat, drink, and be merry.” ’ 20But God said to him, ‘Fool! This night your soul will be required of you; then whose will those things be which you have provided?’ 21So is he who lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.”

• God didn't condemn the barn; He condemned what the barn was for.

What are you storing right now that was never meant to stop with just you, but was intended to keep moving for the benefit of others?

• After everything the wind and the sieve cost you, don't waste it on yourself.

Who is not receiving from your barn right now because you've decided safety matters more than stewardship?

• You were matured to become a barn, not a bank.

Are the wisdom, the healing, and the years stored in you being kept ready for someone else — or has it quietly become a barn built just for yourself?

THREE CONCLUDING QUESTIONS:

1. “What is the wind pulling off you right now that you're grieving like a loss, when it never had the weight to be part of the harvest at all?”

2. “Where is the sieve catching something small and ‘Almost-Right’ that the big trials never touched, and are you lettng it expose you or resenting the mesh? You know, the close people who know you and only want the best for you?”

3. “Is what's stored in you — the wisdom, the healing, the years — being kept ready for someone else, or has it quietly become a barn you built just for yourself?”
